MIT 2.008 is a six-person team-based product design and manufacturing class focused on taking a part from CAD through full-scale production. The class centers around designing and manufacturing a custom yo-yo while learning CNC machining, injection molding, process planning, and design for manufacturing (DFM).

DESIGN & Fabrication

Many iterations were required to reduce defects, ensuring proper shut-off tolerances to prevent flashing at the parting line.

CAD vs Experimental Values

Ejector Pin “Poke-Through”
increase cooling time,
decrease pin length

Flash at Parting Line
increase clamping pressure, decrease packing pressure

Majority of bodies and rings did not meet individual specification limits, but 97.78% (n=50) of Yo-Yo’s met press fit specifications!
